NYBC Campaigns 2012

Bicycle Friendly Bridges provide much needed access for cyclists

Securing safe access across bridges is key to achieving a community’s bicycling potential. NYBC has long been an effective advocate for bicycle-safe bridges. We are currently focused upon two key bridge advocacy projects in the Tappan Zee Bridge Reconstruction as well as the Livingston Avenue Railroad Bridge in the state’s Capital Region. Bicyclists need bridges, and both the Tappan Zee and Livingston Avenue Railroad Bridge campaigns can set precedent across New York State to ensure access and safety for bicyclists to get across the same vital crossings that automobiles utilize.

Complete Your Streets

Communities across the nation are improving their streets, making them safe and comfortable places to walk, use transit, ride a bicycle and use a wheelchair. These improvements are happening because citizens are demanding Complete Streets.

NYBC was a key part of the alliance that passed the 2011 statewide Complete Streets Law. NYBC is committed to supporting widespread and robust implementation of local and statewide Complete Streets policies. NYBC has developed the Bicycle Advocate’s Toolkit which provides tools and resources for promoting complete streets in your community.

NYBC is working with decision makers to ensure that the complete streets law is effective. We encourage citizen involvement. We are particularly focused upon improving collaboration amongst decision makers and bicyclists. NYBC’s goal is to get more people on bicycles, riding on safer streets.

Share the Road

Bicycle education and safety go hand in hand. In order to improve cycling safety  across NY State, NYBC provides educational programs and resources. We sponsor programs to teach riders and potential riders about bike laws and how  to ride safely in traffic.

NYBC promotes policies that protect cyclist’s right to the road, such as safe passing laws, complete street policies and best practices in infrastructure. We produce materials such as PSA’s and traffic safety manuals. NYBC sponsors events that inform the public about the benefits of bicycling.
