Bicycle Coalitions seek Participants for the Let's Commute! ProgramAs part of Bike Month, observed every May, the New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC) and the Albany Bicycle Coalition (ABC) seek participants for the Let's Commute! Program May 4th 7pm at the Guilderland Public Library 2228 Western Avenue. This program will encourage new bike commuters in the Capital District. Participants will be introduced to the benefits of bike commuting by veteran bike commuters, their personal bike buddies, who will share their knowledge about planning, practicing, and riding. They will also be available as personal coaches. On May 4 participants will gather to meet their bike buddies. They will participate in a workshop led by Jesse Day, Executive Director of NYBC. The workshop will motivate and educate the participants and demonstrate for them the benefits of commuting. Jesse's workshop will also teach the requisite skills needed for bicycle commuting, such as road safety. Following the group meeting, the participants and their bike buddies will get together to plan the commute. The bike buddies will help participants tune up an old bike or select a new bike and appropriate accessories, identify a safe route to and from work/school, and run-through the logistics of commuting. Following the early May workshop, the participant and their bike buddy will do a practice ride to and from work/school. The bike buddy will provide motivation, coaching on proper technique for riding in traffic, and make the participant comfortable throughout the journey. Starting the first week of May, the new participants and their bike buddies will bike to and from work/school. For the rest of the month, the new commuters will ride solo, enjoying the benefits of bike commuting. The bike buddies will be standing by, available to support the new commuters when necessary. On Thursday May 26th, the new commuters and their bike buddies will gather for a closing event. Commuters and bike buddies will share their stories and revel in the empowering experience of the last month. Prizes will be awarded to encourage new commuters to keep at it. Bike commuting is an invigorating practice, incorporating exercise and the joy of riding into the day's routine while reducing transportation costs and environmental degradation.
