PRESS RELEASE
New York Bicycling Coalition Sends Response to Clear Channel Executives Calling for Action to Promote Bicycle Safety After DJ's Promote Violence in Other States

For Immediate Release: November 6, 2003
Contact: Jesse Day, Executive Director
Jesse@nybc.net or 518.436.0889

The New York Bicycling Coalition, which represents the interests over 200,000 cyclists in New York State, has sent a letter to the Clear Channel Corporation calling for the establishment of a "nationwide campaign on all Clear Channel's 1200 radio stations be initiated to increase cyclist's safety by the promotion of 'Sharing the Road'".

The recent outcry from bicycling organizations like the New York Bicycling Coalition has stemmed from three Clear Channel morning shows over the summer in Cleveland, OH; Houston, TX and Raleigh, NC; where the disc jockey's promoted violence against the bicyclists on roadways.

"Advocating and condoning violence against innocent people in today's society is reprehensible and will not be tolerated by groups like us," said Jackie Marchand, NYBC Board Member of the New York Bicycling Coalition. "Cyclists are in general peaceful individuals who by riding their bicycles instead of driving, promote a healthy environment, reduce congestion on crowded roads, and contribute to the health and safety of our population," the letter from Executive Director Jesse Day when on to say. "We hope that these unfortunate statements will eventually lead to changes beneficial to both bicyclists and Clear Channel. We would like to hear a detailed response from Clear Channel on how you will accomplish this."

The all volunteer board and small paid staff of the New York Bicycling Coalition works hard to promote safe bicycling and pedestrian conditions across New York State. The $10,000, actual or promised [from Clear Channel for bike safety] would not cover even one serious injury to a bicyclist by a motorized vehicle. The New York Bicycling Coalition and cycling community across the country looks forward to a positive result for both parties involved.
