Get Your Bicycle Ready for Spring! For Immediate Release
Date: April 5, 2005 Contact: Jesse Day Executive Director 518.436.0889 or nybc@nybc.netTechnically Spring is here. The weather will soon be turning warm, and you know what that means: It is time to get back on the bike that has been sitting idle all Winter!Your bicycle may need a tune up, or you might want to purchase a brand new one; in which case the New York Bicycling Coalition recommends you support the local bike shops in your area that support our mission of safer roads and a cleaner environment. Check out www.nybc.net/clubs/calendar/ for a listing of New York Bicycling Coalition member shops. But regardless of what bike you’ll be riding this Spring; you should check your bike for safety and readiness before riding. Here are a few valuable tips: Every time you ride, perform what is called an ABC check: a check of the air (A), brakes (B) and crank (C) (where the pedal arms attach to the bike). Make sure there is enough air in the tires according to the suggested tire pressure written on the tire sidewalls. Test the brakes before riding the bicycle. Rock the pedals side to side to see if there is any sideways movement; which can cause failure. If you need to fix these problems and cannot do it yourself, please visit your local bike shop. Half on New Yorkers own a bike. Whether you are an avid mountain biker or simply trying to incorporate cycling into your daily routine -- you too can reap the many health benefits of bicycling. And there is no better time to get started than this Spring! Drivers should remember that there are more cyclists on the roadways in the spring. “Drivers and cyclists should take extra care as potholes from winter road wear and spring flooding are at a peak,” said Jesse Day, Executive Director. Share the road with bicyclists! ----- Don't forget National Bike to Work Week May 16-20. You can visit Bike Month Official Webiste or NYBC Capital Bike Month for more information on setting up a bike to work week for your workplace and for more cycling events. The New York Bicycling Coalition is the only statewide organization that works towards increasing bike safety through improved infrastructure and safety education. The Coalition represents the interests of over 300,000 bicyclists in New York State. For more information call the NY Bicycling Coalition at 518-436-0889 ### |
