New York Bicycling Coalition seeks Executive Director - CLOSEDThe New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC) is a well established, 15 year-old statewide non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a coherent, credible voice for the interests of all bicyclists in the state, on- or off-road, recreational or racer. We are seeking a highly energetic, innovative individual willing to make at least a three-year commitment to this challenging position. S/he must have strong communication skills, verbal and written, along with proven program and fund development experience. This person needs to be in place in Albany, New York - the State Capitol - no later than April of 2005 to begin the transfer of the day to day management of our group from the existing executive director to the new E/D. Qualifications1) Proven commitment to the mission: Ideally, a strong candidate will have experience as a cyclist, and be committed to working collaboratively with a strong and experienced volunteer Board of Directors to create an improved, safer environment for bicycling throughout New York State. The candidate must: a) have advocacy experience, with an ability to garner and engage volunteers to carry out advocacy campaigns and b) provide a description of successful projects/or accomplishments and c) provide a simple list of thoughts on what s/he thinks about NYBC priorities/goals 2) Proven success raising money: The next NYBC E/D must have some experience in raising funds from a variety of sources - private individuals, foundations, corporation, government grants. The NYBC Board is committed to developing a diverse and sustainable array of financial resources in order to, at minimum, double the annual budget of the organization within the next two years. 3) Proven communication skills: The E/D is the public "face" of the organization, and during her/his career the organization's new leader will have demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills. Ideally, the new candidate will also have some web programming and desktop publishing experience. Regular communication with our members, statewide constituency and among our Board is essential to the success of NYBC. 4) Proven leadership skills: NYBC's E/D must be a consensus builder, and have demonstrated the capacity to work with a wide array of interests - government officials, bicycle clubs, civic and business leaders and the news media. Our roots are in the service to bicycling clubs and their regional bicycling issues. The E/D will have thoughts and plans on reaching-out to clubs for mobilizing and activating their membership. 5) Proven expertise on bicycling, pedestrian and related transportation issues: The executive director must have a sophisticated understanding of bicycling, pedestrian and sensible transportation issues and have a track record of professional experience in this policy area. This includes managing bicycle, pedestrian and related transportation advocacy and planning projects, a body of published professional papers and presentations and recognized stature in the field. 6) Proven ability to budget, plan and maintain focus: The executive director must be able to identify key goals, strategies for achieving those goals, and raise funds and resources to support those strategies. This requires the ability to budget, plan, control spending and be flexible about changing course and honestly evaluating existing and proposed programs. NYBC's E/D must all have a proven ability to manage outside consultants as well as full and part-time paid staff.
