Capital Bike Week 2007
May 14th - 20th
Preliminary Schedule:
On the morning of the 15th, NYBC will be hosting a Legislative Breakfast & bike ride at the State Capital in Albany. The Legislative Breakfast will present current initiatives to promote bicycling and walking in New York State. This year our major goals are to introduce a Safe Passing Law and to include more Share the Road information in all drivers' education classes. Breakfast will be available from 9 - 10am in Room 211A in the Legislative Office Building (LOB) on State Street in Albany. During that time we will introduce a few guest speakers and discuss some of the current initiatives to promote bicycling and walking in New York State. After the breakfast, there will be a short ride around the downtown Albany area and additional time for you to meet with your local representative to discuss current bicycle and pedestrian issues. The ride will start in front the LOB at approximately 10:15 and bicycle valet parking will be available at that spot during the breakfast. Wednesday 16th: Ride of Silence The Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. This year's event will start at St. James Square in Niskayuna at 6:30pm and will make two loops of 4.6 miles around the city. For information on the Ride of Silence, contact Sue Troll at trollasko@aol.com or visit http://www.rideofsilence.org/. Thursday 17th: Capital Commuter Contest Once again, NYBC will be hosting the Capital Commuter Contest which pits a cyclist against a motorist and a transit rider during rush traffic. For the past three years, the bicyclist has come out ahead. Join us this year to see if we can make it four in a row. Friday 18th: Bike to Work Day On Friday, we will follow up the week's events with Bike to Work Day around the Capital District. NYBC will be working with interested individuals and local organizations in an effort to encourage more people to bicycle to work. If you are interested in participating in our Bicycle Buddy Commuter Program or would like more information on any of the mentioned events drop us a line at nybc@nybc.net or call us 518.436.0889. |
