Why Your Membership Is Important

Opportunities
Policy makers, at all levels of governments, need to hear our concerns - WE NEED YOUR HELP. Transportation decisions at the federal and state level can be monitored by our staff, but more eyes and ears at the local level is very important. Join our network! And the private sector--now very well represented on NYBC's Board--sees the great value that safe cycling and walking presents to the New York State economy. Cycling and walking, activities that help create sustainable and livable communities, even work on an emotional level, responding to the growing citizen backlash against unfettered development.

Threats
In the 1990s, ISTEA and TEA-21 helped divert transportation monies to inter-modal transportation, including bicycling and walking. In 2003, the federal transportation bill, now called TEA-3, is up for reauthorization.

Public Education
NYBC sees one of its core functions as actively educating policy makers, bureaucrats, private businesses and the general public about the value that safe cycling and walking brings to both urban and rural environments in New York State. We have begun to advocate and educate and could use your help!  Our Safety Problem Solving Manual is a comprehensive look at safety and advocacy for bicyclist, pedestrians and transportation advocates and professionals across New York State.  Download the manual.

Training and Technical Assistance
From the beginning, NYBC's Board--which represents decades of experience in high level transportation planning and infrastructure development and the health field--has provided its expertise to local clubs and governmental entities at all levels to create opportunities and solve problems. This is also a central function of the organization that we hope to expand.

Responding To Your Needs
NYBC's dedicated and hard-working Board is anxious to serve your needs. Invite one of our Board members to a meeting of your local cycling club. Ask us for support letters. They are there to help you.

Strength In Numbers
There are tens of thousands of cyclists in New York State and we all know that there is great strength in numbers, especially if we are all pulling together. Whether you are a racer, recreational road rider or an off-road enthusiast, the NYBC "tent" is a wide one and we strongly encourage you to join us. Our Mission > >

Board Development

NYBC is actively seeking new board members and volunteers. We welcome activists, planners, and representatives from the private sector. Additionally, we are interested in working with individuals from agencies not traditionally aligned with bike-ped activities but who have a stake in transportation choice, e.g. tourism, handicapped, the elderly, minorities, the environment, smart growth, job training, etc. Our board members do not necessarily represent the organizations they work for, but bring to NYBC experience from many different parts of their lives.
